WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Writer/Editor tells stories about the work The Nature Conservancy in Washington and its partners are doing to create a thriving future for people and nature. The Writer/Editor must bring a strong equity lens and create asset- and values-based story packages that may include blog posts emails social media newsletters talking points and communication pieces for other channels. This position works closely with our conservation staff philanthropy team and government relations team to create compelling content that builds support and inspires action.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU
We are looking for a storyteller who knows how to write edit and create content that will move hearts and minds and ultimately make a difference in our world. We aspire to center our work around equity values and asset-based communication as we work toward a world where nature and all people thrive.
As a writer and editor for the Washington marketing team you will have the opportunity to research write edit and publish the stories we tell and center a variety of voices as we share the work that TNC and our partners are doing here and around the world.
In a typical week your work will involve managing and advancing multiple projects such as: identifying and following leads for writing opportunities conducting interviews writing content editing written work of other staff and/or freelance contributors and publishing content on our blog. Writing and editing work will primarily focus on blogs and articles with newsletters emails fact sheets presentations etc. also included. You will have abundant opportunities throughout the year to cover a broad variety of topics and areas of our work. Frequent and close collaboration with colleagues will be the norm.
We value lived experience and welcome applicants that have obtained knowledge and skills beyond traditional credentials. When it comes to our values and aspiration of centering our work around equity—racial and environmental especially—and asset-based communications we are very much on a learning journey. We haven’t figured a lot of it out just yet but we know where we want to go (for example see the Washington Equity Statement). We’re looking for those who will be active supportive participants in that journey.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and 5 years related experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience writing and/or editing one or more of the following: blogs newsletters long-form articles/stories (print or digital) annual reports fact sheets presentations or equivalent.
- Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
- Ability to act in accordance with the Washington equity statement; be respectful of differences of identity and/or beliefs and successfully work across those differences to meet work objectives.
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience.
- Strong equity lens and skill in centering racial social and environmental equity into all aspects of work and a commitment to continued learning in this space.
- Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
- Experience with values- or asset-based writing.
- Experience taking complicated subjects (e.g. conservation science climate policy etc.) and translating them into approachable relevant and action-inspiring stories for a variety of audiences.
- Familiarity with writing editing and communications technologies and best practices.
- Experience leading or managing multiple concurrent projects.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles rental cars or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered high risk drivers. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement which may include a review of the prospective employee’s motor vehicle record.
The estimated starting salary for this position is dependent on qualifications experience and location.
- Salary range in Seattle WA: $74000 – $85000 annually
- Salary range in other Washington state locations: $66000 – $77000 annually
